The Year of Our Lord 1403

One king sits in a cell.
Another holds the throne.

ienna, March of 1402: King Wenceslas is taken by his own brother, Sigismund of Hungary, and Bohemia must choose. Five roads lead into the barony of Trosky, beneath the twin towers of its castle, and every house that stands there must stand on a side.

Deliverance & Destiny is a world for living a life of 1403, not grinding one. Thou shalt arrive a stranger, known to none, and every name, every oath, every coin and every enemy thou gainest is thine to keep.

What Awaits Thee

Seven Chapters of a Life in Trosky

Men-at-arms gathered in a forest clearing
I

A Realm of Offices and Oaths

The Lord of Trosky rules the barony, a head sits over every house in a hall of their own, and a mayor answers for every town. Serve in the Retinue of Trosky, the Watch, the garrisons of Semine and Nebakov, the Road Wardens or the Game Wardens.

  • Ranks, wages and powers for every post
  • Treasuries for every castle, manor and town
  • Levies drawn up the line of lords at payday
Swords crossed in battle
II

Two Causes, One Throne

Pledge to Sigismund of Hungary or to King Wenceslas IV, in the open or in secret; a secret pledge is never written. Every house is on a side: feud, wary, peace or alliance, and no alliance may stand where two sides meet. The heralds cry every pledge, feud and treaty.

  • War between the causes, first to fifteen or three days
  • Fealty, vassals and the realm map of allegiances
  • Criers who read the king's word aloud
Outlaws ambushing at a river crossing
III

The Law and the Lawless

Swear an oath with four others and ride as outlaws: five men, or it is nothing. Thirty-eight camps wait upon the map, bandits roam the wild grounds, and the Watch rides its patrol. Fall, and thy band is written into the Ledger of the Dead.

  • Warrants and bounties on the Wanted board
  • The Thieves' Guild, and a fence with contraband
  • Petty, common and grave crimes, and those who answer them
A busy market street beneath a church spire
IV

Hearth, Key and Coin

Buy a house through the Estate Office, with doors that open by rank. Give keys and take them back; keep a chest no other soul can open; seal a deed in wax to sell to another. Work a trade for an hourly wage and climb the Labour Roll, from Newcomer to Master of the craft.

  • Tavern keepers, smiths, butchers, herbalists, barbers and more
  • Trade between players, both hands agreed
  • The tax collector at payday, and the Church's tithe
A noble wedding beneath a rose arbour
V

Blood and Name

Thou art a stranger until thou speakest thy name, and a name given is not a name returned. Found a noble house with a family tree and the crest of its village; offer marriage, swear alliance, or declare an open hatred cried in every town.

  • Formal presentations by one who knows you both
  • A herald's fanfare when a lord arrives
  • Thy Journal: every name exchanged, every day lived
Candlelit tavern interior
VI

The Faithful

The Church keeps its own order, the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star. They cry against witchcraft, send edicts to lords, and measure the Church's regard for every house. When thou fallest, the brothers carry thee to the bathhouse, and the bath maids tend thee back to life.

  • Alms, warrants and the Church's regard
  • The Church's blessing for those still without a wage
  • The executed, remembered in the ledger
Riders on a forest road
VII

The Road

A day lasts an hour. Hunger, thirst and the weariness of the road are gilt rings that crack when thou art starved. Name thy horse, stallion or mare, and feed it apples for courage; buy a destrier from twelve war-horses. Send a letter by pigeon, and whisper to three metres or shout to fifty.

  • Stables in every town, a stall for every horse
  • The wounded eye: blurred and failing when near death
  • The realm's own compass, map, journal and codex
